Every Problem You Avoid Is Charging You Interest

What if the most expensive debt you’re carrying isn’t your student loans, credit cards, or mortgage? You might be dealing with something called Avoidance Debt.

What if it’s the debt created every time you avoid looking at your finances?

In this episode of the Fiscal Debt™ Series, I introduce Avoidance Debt, one of the six hidden forms of debt that quietly steal your peace, confidence, and financial future.

Most people think financial freedom begins with budgeting.

I disagree.

Financial freedom begins with one decision:

Stop looking away.

For years, I avoided my own finances because I believed I wasn’t “good with money.” Like many first-generation Latinas, I convinced myself that someone else understood money better than I did.

That belief kept me stuck.

And after coaching hundreds of women, I’ve learned something powerful:

Avoidance isn’t laziness.

Avoidance is protection.

Your brain is trying to keep you safe from uncomfortable emotions—even when those emotions are keeping you from building wealth.

In this episode, I share the coaching conversations, client stories, and mindset shifts that help high-achieving women finally stop avoiding their finances and start creating the lives they truly want.

What Is Avoidance Debt?

Avoidance Debt is the emotional and financial cost of postponing financial decisions.

Unlike credit card debt or student loans, Avoidance Debt isn’t listed on your credit report.

Instead, it shows up as:

  • unopened bank statements
  • ignored student loan balances
  • never checking investment accounts
  • putting off retirement planning
  • telling yourself, “I’ll deal with it later.”

Every month you avoid your finances, interest continues to grow.

So does the emotional weight.

Stress compounds.

Shame compounds.

Missed opportunities compound.

That’s why I say:

“Every problem you avoid is charging you interest.”

Why High-Achieving Women Still Avoid Money

One of the biggest myths I hear is:

“I’m successful everywhere else…why can’t I figure out money?”

The truth is that many successful women weren’t taught financial literacy.

Instead, they learned perfectionism.

Achievement.

People pleasing.

Working harder.

Money requires a different skill.

It requires curiosity instead of judgment.

During this episode, I share the story of a client with private student loans who spent years avoiding her balances because she believed she had made a mistake she could never recover from.

The debt wasn’t what kept her stuck.

The shame was.

Once we began exploring her money story instead of criticizing it, everything changed.

Your Brain Thinks Debt Is a Threat

One of my favorite coaching tools is explaining what happens inside the brain.

When you open your student loan account or credit card statement, your primitive brain often interprets it as danger.

Your body responds with:

  • fear
  • anxiety
  • freezing
  • procrastination

So instead of taking action, you close the laptop.

The temporary relief feels good.

But only for a moment.

Eventually, the balance is still there.

Only now it’s larger.

The Hidden Cost of Looking Away

Avoidance doesn’t just increase interest.

It costs opportunities.

During this episode, I share another client story about a woman with more than half a million dollars in student loan debt.

She believed she’d simply pay it off over thirty years.

What she didn’t realize was that interest meant the payoff timeline would likely be much longer.

Even more heartbreaking?

She lost a career opportunity because her financial situation wasn’t where it needed to be.

Avoidance had become much more expensive than the debt itself.

Three Ways to Start Overcoming Avoidance Debt

1. Start Smaller Than You Think

Don’t try to create a five-year financial plan today.

Open one account.

Read one statement.

Take one small step.

Progress creates confidence.

2. Stop Judging Yourself

Money mistakes don’t define your intelligence.

Financial literacy is learned.

Just like any other skill.

3. Celebrate Every Win

Whether you pay an extra $25 or $250 toward debt, celebrate it.

Wealth is built through consistent action—not perfection.

Key Quotes From This Episode

“Every problem you avoid is charging you interest.”

“Financial freedom begins with a decision—not a finance degree.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Avoidance Debt?

Avoidance Debt is the emotional and financial cost created when you postpone making financial decisions. It includes avoiding debt balances, bank statements, investing, budgeting, or financial planning.

Why do people avoid looking at their finances?

Many people avoid money because finances trigger fear, shame, or uncertainty. Avoidance often serves as a short-term coping mechanism, but it usually leads to greater financial stress over time.

Can I become financially free even if I have student loans?

Absolutely. Financial freedom isn’t determined by where you start—it’s determined by the decisions you make consistently over time.

Reflection Questions

Before you leave today’s episode, spend a few minutes journaling.

Ask yourself:

  • What financial decision have I been avoiding?
  • What is this avoidance costing me emotionally?
